I have this chronic itch to write something true and important. There is a thought in here; has been for a long time. Not quite sure how to put it into words. On the bright side, I am probably no more wrong about things than I was last year. So I'll give it one more attempt in 2020. Here goes.
Forty years ago, as I recall, I wrote this, and at the time it seemed true and important:
"Theories are partial, parochial, ephemeral and contingent. Don't sell your soul for a theory, even this one."
I still like the unusual words I used back then, but they don't feel quite right. What I meant was:
a creed is a list of points for discussion.
No, no, what I really meant to say was this:
an idea may point to the truth, but the closer you get to the truth, the more the idea gets in the way.
On fourth thought:
current heterodoxy becomes the orthodoxy of the next age and a fossil soon after, where it remains unless it is dug up to become the current heterodoxy once again.
On the other hand:
the currency of thought is metaphor. Enlightenment is noticing that the metaphor is counterfeit.
Naw...:
an idea is just an idea; words are just words; and the Truth is always more than what can be thought or spoken.
I think I didn't quite say it all. One more attempt, using $50 words:
life is recursive eisegesis. If you are alive, it's your turn to say what it all means.
What do you think?
No?
Proves my point.
Maybe next year.

I'm getting very nervous as we approach the year's end. Don't you DARE erase all you posts!
ReplyDeleteHow can we compare you next year ideas with last year's ideas if you dump them all in the bin?
(Recalling JW's license plate: METAPHOR; all language is metaphor, after all.)
