Rushing Ahead

As 2021 winds down, I notice how the globe is spinning faster, both on its axis and around its orbit. Our iPhone was so nifty six years ago when we discovered we needed one to avoid disappearing from our friends' field of view. Since then, while LOL- ing with the crowd, I didn't notice how the phone was aging. Jeremy noticed, and on Christmas day this year, he upgraded us to a later model.

Jeremy is our son-in-law. When I was a son-in-law, the job description was showing Dorothy's folks they were wrong about me. It took 30 years or so before I passed inspection. A generation later, the world has turned. Now a son-in-law is the IT expert without whom you fall off the digital conveyor belt as it accelerates around the next AI revolution. He's never wrong because he has Siri on call. I was born too soon to make it as a son-in-law.

For the last few days, every time I open the new phone, it tells me about some new trick it can do. I checked messages just before we went for a walk and read about today's new feature. Who would have thought you could type faster by dragging your thumb from letter to letter around the keyboard. I had to give it a try. Imagine my surprise when I drag-typed "Duck did icky shoo." I kid you not. I wasn't sure what the iPhone was telling me so I asked Siri to explain. She replied, "If you walk around the pond today, watch your step."

We didn't visit the pond and were pleased to arrive home with clean shoes.  I think Apple is onto something here.  Better than a crystal ball or astrology for sure. I am considering a new blog featuring predictions drag-typed on my new iPhone. I might call it Nostradamus 2.0 or maybe NostraSirius, giving credit to the dame in the phone

  1. Here was I trying to come up with some clever words to live by. Had I only known -- and had I a smart phone -- I could have asked Siri.

Thanks for all your clever words and Greetings and wishes for a wonderful New Year to you and all your in-laws and out-laws :-)

    1. I asked Siri what I should reply to your comment. She said, "Since recursive complexification of Knowledge began 37 minutes ago, such primitive human questions are no longer in Siri's domain and will be referred to the subroutine named Homer."
      So I asked Homer.
      Homer nailed it.
Marion, your comment is a gift. Thanks.
The old poets really had something; but I'm a bit worried about Siri.
