Get Wise

Lots of late night TV these days. We have been watching Get Smart, from the sixties, so long ago but remembered with a smile. Being smart may be annoying, is often funny, is sometimes dangerous, and is not the same thing as being wise. Don Adams plays the smart fool convincingly.

"The fool doth think he is wise,
but the wise man knows himself to be a fool."
(Shakespeare: As You Like It).

Get smart or get wise.
The smart cherry-pick opinions on their smart phones.
The wise gather evidence and consider the source.
The smart dismiss opposition with purple epithets.
The wise invite scrutiny.
The smart are sure.
The wise estimate their uncertainty.
The smart want to win.
The wise want to know.

Based on 80 years of experience
the details of which I would like to keep private,
there is a 62.5% probability I am right about this,
give or take 40%.
Been smart for awhile. Time to get wise.
